Would we be told if aliens contacted Earth?
If SETI projects actually received a signal from aliens, would officials tell the public? That's the question explored in this article. It's an interesting point to ponder.
I imagine conspiracy theorists would believe the government would hush such a finding. Some think that SETI searching is pointless because the UFOs are already here and the government knows all about them, but isn't telling.
Even if the aliens are here, then they can't be all bad because Pravda says they destoyed the Tunguska meteor to save Earth. Pravda is the Russian word for truth so they can't be making that up.
I don't think that they'd supress any such SETI discovery. The truth will out sooner or later so what would the point be?

E.T UFOs - Why The Government Would NOT Tell Us About Them.
ET UFOs - Why The Government(s) Wouldn't Tell Us About Them - A Theoretical System's View.
The subject of (Extra Terrestrial -Ed) UFOs tends to carry the waft of an incredulous odor along with it wherever it doth go, but if we separate the issues (the existence of ET UFOs vs the existence of Government coverup policies) and look at it logically, I believe it's _no-contest_ that the (Western) Governments would indeed NOT inform the public of alien contact.
imo, there is a -compelling- argument for precisely why various Governments would indeed engage in a coverup and would NOT want the general public to know of the existence of UFOs
That reason is math.
The math of religion
and
The math of social destabilization.
in short, social-instability based on general population Panic.
PANIC based on the challenging of the core structure of a society's major religion(s)
(and their followers - Ed)
The math of religion stipulates that Globally there are approx 2 billion Christians.
(and two billion Islamists, one billion Hindu, half a billion Chinese traditionalists, another half a billion Buddhists, another half a billion PrimalAfrican, all the way down to about half a million Scientologists, interestingly most of which can accomodate or include mention of alien life forms - Ed)
Yes OK Ed, but I presume the Q is would -Western- Governments coverup E.T encounters and if so Why?
And I believe the answers are,
1. YES, Western (read: Christian - Ed) governments would coverup the existence of alien life.
and
2. because the news effects religion (read: appears to contradict Christianity) and therefore undermines Western (Christian -Ed) society.
(separation of church and state aside, though many are loathe to admit it in the western world, even our laws are based on the 10 commandments and our "morality" on The Holy Bible)
And the rub here as I see it is, IF the existence of aliens contradicts (either implicitly or explicitly) a world religion's/society fundamental core belief system, that society's Government WILL coverup the existence of alien life, to preserve social order.
that is, in cases where, you tell them that ETs exist and you're also telling them that their religion/what they were brough up believing, is WRONG. the Government will select NOT to release that belief-systems-challenging information.
That right there is why the Gov would not tell us of the existence of alien life, in the Judeo-Christian West.
IIRC the population-panic/social-anarchy tipping point kicks in when 8% of a population becomes unhinged/unglued/go-insane/destabalize/have-their-core-beliefs-shattered, after which the panic-effect spreads throughout that society exponentially until (if left unchecked - Ed) social order breaks down and anarchy takes over.
That (alleged - Ed) anti social-breakdown anti-instability Government policy may change as society changes, but up until the 1980s (before the age of electronic enlightenment - Ed) in my view there was simply absolutely no way the Gov would admit to encounters with, or the existence of, E.T UFOs.
Because job #1 of a Government is to maintain social orde and stability.
I do believe that policy may change as society evolves though.
In this part of the world, we've only had, wot, 30 years? outside of the iron-gripped control of organized religion, and as I see it, that's simply not enough time, given that we've spent the last 1500 years in a religion-controlled environ.
Give it another 500 years, and then Government policy may change to reflect social change. Time for a good few solid generations to grow up less indoctrinated, less religio-centric, to a point where there is less of a risk that 8-10% of the population will spread panic when their religious beliefs are challenged.
And thereby threaten social order.
But even that's pure math optimism on my part.
I'm presupposing 500 solid continual years of a move AWAY from organized religion (having such a powerful influence over society -Ed) yet if I had to guess based strictly on an analysis of human history, I don't think I'd guess we'd get those 500 years.
I would think that you earthlings uh I mean we won't likely make it another 100 years in this separate direction before the pendulum swings back and religion begins to re-take hold of society ..again.
(if so, Athiests, you may begin SCREAMING *scribble* *scribble* *erase* carry the 42..now - Ed)

And That's My View.

Control
The problem with telling everyone that theres other life out there is simply control. They use every differnt thing they can think of to keep control. Some of it good and some not so good. If everyone were to suddenly learn that all religion was wrong people would freak!
Even the pope has recently said that if there are aliens then they are also gods children?? Does he know something we don't about Aliens. He has two very powerful observeries so he just may.
Not Pope / Catholic Scientific Wing (Jesuits) Are Pro-Alien.
IIRC it wasn't the Pope, it was The Pope's Jesuit Astronomer. But I agree about the Fear (of contradiction) and Control 100% Jess!
I did find the statement highly interesting though not surprising considering the source.
The Jesuits (read: the academic wing of the Catholic Church) have always been pro Science. I been attempting to mention this for years, in "Science vs Religion" debates, but it appears that unless one went to a Jesuit school, most of the public doesn't seem to be aware of that.
As the Pope's astronomer (José Gabriel Funes - Ed) 'ere said, Jesuits are hard-pressed to see a conflict between Science and Religion, The Pope however will still go ape-shiite on extremist Evolutionists that attempt to use evolution to attack religion and particularly when they try to use and distort evolution to argue that it proves there is no God.
Any reasoned balanced analysis of the science of evolution would show that there is no such anti-God conclusion possible within the construct of "evolution".
As we know, Evolution is all about change -after- creation, evolution falls completely apart when it tries to explain original creation/ origin itself.
Anyway, I do find the timing of this public statement interesting, but that's possibly because I am one of those (nutjobs - Ed) *cough* uh that often entertains the notion that there is an illuminati-like world power structure, essentially a group of power brokers (though I believe they're comprised of members from various communities, not religions only, but biz leaders, world leaders and the like) and this group attempts to guide western society.
and when statements like this pop up the, "acclimating the public to a new shift in thinking or to an upcoming change in social structure" alarm bells go firing off in me head.
I'm half serious.
(and entirely insane, so not to worry - Ed)
*cough*
However, for this issues purposes there is already a prevalent motive to dip Christian toes into these Alien waters. Christianity on the whole may want to publicly embrace the possibilitiy of Alien life, as a function of protective forward thinking, for the reasons that I outlined in my post above.
1a. To "clarify" the record so that the panic-mongering extremists that belong to (all - Ed) organized religions, become acclimated to the idea that their religion ISN'T being undermined if (when - Ed) Aliens show up.
(in other words so they won't become unglued - Ed)
1b. Because if your religion was um .. interpreted .. to have said that there ought not be Aliens, then your religion would look right daft when the Aliens showed up on CNN, wouldn't it.
(Posterior protection at its finest! - Ed)
1b is likely the real reason for the Pope's Astronomer's announcement at this time, but the acclimating-the-public-to-Alien-life offshoot effect has raised this viewers eyebrow.
It makes one think (though mostly hope - Ed) that they're (the world social order society - Ed) are now attempting to prepare the public for an upcoming alien encounter, one that they're already aware is coming, because they've already made contact and have been hashing out how to best manage the public introductions.
Wishful thinking (particularly for that SF und Alien enthusiast - Ed) no doubt, but imo Alien life exists, and I would like to witness first (public - Ed) contact, and so I will entertain that notion for as long as is um (inhumanly - he is an alien you know - Ed) possible.

[Alleged -Ed] Video of ALIEN Reported on Huffington Post Today
"Alien Video To Be Revealed Tomorrow Man Claims" - Huffington Post Article.
/Begin Article Excerpt/
A video that purportedly shows a living, breathing space alien will be shown to the news media Friday in Denver.
"It shows an extraterrestrial's head popping up outside of a window at night, looking in the window, that's visible through an infrared camera," he said. The alien is about 4 feet tall and can be seen blinking, Peckman said earlier this month.
An instructor at the Colorado Film School in Denver scrutinized the video "very carefully" and determined it was authentic, Peckman said.

I jest ye not. heh.
can't say whether the bloke that's releasing the video of the alleged Alien, is jesting or not, 'owever.

Any news or link to the video? I quite enjoyed the autopsy, I would love to see this one.

I am skeptical
I'm sure it will make a great double feature with the alien autopsy video.
As much as me and Fox Mulder want to believe, I have my doubts that such a video is authentic. I will reserve judgement until I actually see it, not that my eyes haven't been deceived before by nifty movie F/X.

[CNN with Alien Videographer] I am intrigued but also Skeptical
I agree. Although I hate to pooh pooh this sort of thing before they have a decent opportunity to make their case, and particularly before we have an opportunity to examine the evidence, I don't think they're off to a terribly good start.
The appearance on Larry King on CNN certainly didn't do their case any favours, in this viewer's opinion.
When the Larry King is having difficulty keeping a straight face half of the time you're in serious trouble.
It also doesn't help your credibility when you appear to be unable to answer questions ..quickly or uh straightly.
None of which proves anything. King's opinion ought not necessarily supercede anyone else's and not everyone, particularly not average-joe citizen, has the benefit of a PR advisor, an image consultant or test-run professionals to fine tune their appearance on national television but what was most troubling for me, was the _subconscious_ effect the CNN interviewee and alien-video-taker in question (Stan Tiger Romanek - Ed) had on me.
Most disconcertingly I found the video author's Q&A style highly reminiscent of the uh what's a polite word for hucksters Ed? ("hucksters" - Ed) right of the hicksters that occasionally appear on Coast to Coast AM.
Conventiently, nothing they say is absolute, words are parsed a little too carefully (with legal ramifications and plausible-denial in subcutaneous tow -Ed), and there is never a verifiable outside source to corroborate their story.
Stories unfold rarely so neatly or conveniently in real life. I find. It happens but it's rare. And that raises concern for me.
I happen to heavily enjoy C2CAM or did when Art Bell was hosting. I found both it and him heavily entertaining and even informative, but there was always an inevitable con man (or two - Ed) on there, looking to make a buck off of his audience, and there were observable patterns in those hucksters behavior, imo.
I'm not writing this off just yet, I''d like to at least see the video before I make any personal judgement, and this is quite a bit of "fun", which has its own merits, but the initial impression isn't terribly good, at least for this viewer.

[Alien Video] - Still Photo From and Denver Press Conference Vid
Haven't found The Video as yet.
Apparently it was shown to "professional journalists" and (surprisingly - Ed) none of them seem to have breached journalistic ethical standards ergo no bootlegged video copy from the press conference has surfaced (as yet - Ed).
To tide us over until it does surface there is an officially sanctioned still photo from the Video:
an interesting video from the same Denver Alien-Video Press Conference in which, Denver'ite and Press-Conference-organizer Jeff Peckman talks about the need for an "Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission" (he's currently trying to get 4000 Denver signatures in order to get that proposal on a November ballot)
Interesting if only for his take on why the Government would cover up E.T UFOs.
and an er "re-creation" that is circulating (a polite word for fake - Ed)
and a diary-styled blog of the conference by David J. Chacon, Rocky Mountan News located 'ere:

Not convincing
If we ever do get real evidence, it's going to have to come from someone with a much more credible story and convincing attitude. When I first heard this story I thought that this 'sighting' happened recently. As soon as I heard that this supposedly happened 5 years ago, all credibility was lost. To hear the guy say that he gave it to [unknown] scientists for authentication 5 years ago and still won't let us see it because they are still working on it is just silly.
Gimme a break.

I just want to see this...
I never really for a second thought this would be real, I just want to see what the fuss is about, but there is still nothing on torrent. The whole way this is brought forward is in itself amusing, and an alien out of a window??? Oh please!
