Compare your top 10 sci-fi movies list to that of the AFI

The American Film Institute periodically releases various lists of the best movies. This week, they came out with the top 10 movies of different genres, such as mysteries, romantic comedies and of course the one the one that interests us - science fiction.

These lists are totally subjective, but they are fun to debate. I'd agree with 8 of the movies on their list, but might chance the order around slightly. The only two that I'd drop are Terminator 2 and Back to the Future. I'd replace them with Gattaca and Solaris.

The Sci Fi Channel recently polled its viewers to pick their top science fiction books, tv shows and movies. Their lists make interesting reading and their top 10 movie list only shares four titles from the AFI list.

IO9 blog observes that the fan-chosen list contains a fair bit of dystopian fiction. I guess it's a sign of the times.

Here's another recent top 10 list of science fiction TV shows as listed by one blogger. There is some overlap with the list above, but it's obvious that you're never going to get a consensus with the ordering of the rankings. This list of top 5 movies doesn't even have any overlap with the AFI or the Sci Fi Channel lists.

AFI is apeless

Totally agree that T2 and Back to the Future have no place on any TOP SF film list.  I would have to include the original Planet of the Apes as a much more deserving movie. Gattaca is a good call though.  Another one that really should dropped from the list is Star Wars. It was a huge hit and has readeeming qualities, but it is really just a rehash and retroview to a bunch of movies and serials that preceeded it. At the time SFX was the big breakthough feature of SW. Many people even consider it a Fantasy instead of a real Science Fiction movie.

What's up with the AFI!!!

Back to the future? ET??? I wonder what kind of criterions they used to make up this list. I'm always amazed and somewhat annoyed by the fact that people often mistake sci-fi for anything fanciful. How could they possibly not put Star Wars: The empire strikes back and Return of the Jedi in there. There are so many good, really good sci-fi movies out there, what about Logan's run or close encounters of the third kind to mention a few. I absolutely disagree with Lazarus on Star Wars, most people are introduced to sci-fi either  by watching Star Wars (the sequel not the prequel most of it is overkill in my opinion) or the Star Trek serie. Star Wars appeals to a mass audience (of both sci-fi oficionado and the not so fervent crowd) because it has it all. An epic story of good versus evil, great dialogue, characters you can actually care about and of course breathtaking action. Basically Star Wars is a great blend of Hard and soft sci-fi.
