CSI investigates a science fiction convention

I can't wait to see how CSI depicts science fiction fans when the popular crime show visits a fan convention in an upcoming episode. The episode will star Kate Vernon, who played Ellen Tigh on Battlestar Galactica, and will feature a cameo of BSG's executive producer. I'm hoping it will be sympathetic since CSI's own executive producer has worked on Star Trek: TNG and DS9 and a few other SF shows.

Science fiction TV isn't for everyone, but maybe the CSI episode will help turn some people on to the genre. Are there sci-fi shows that appeal to non-fans? This list suggests a few of the best.

In other TV news, rumours have popped up that George Lucas has begun casting his long-anticipated, live-action Star Wars television show. No one knows when the show will actually arrive on the small screen, but if this rumour proves to be true then it's a good sign that it can't be that far off.

Over at ABC, they have picked up a mini-series called Impact which is about a giant meteor heading toward Earth. Now that sounds original.

A few years ago CSI treated

A few years ago CSI treated a comicbook convention with appaling and insulting portrayals. I hope this will be better.

Big Bang Theory

I've never seen even one episode of any of the many CSI variants or the original show. (Am I the last man on Earth who can claim that?) Maybe this will give me a reason to watch.

One show that delivers to my inner geekyness is "The Big Bang Theory". Now I'll just assume that everyone here is watching that. I mean c'mon, it's a show featuring 4 geeks. Now only does it deliver on the laughs, but it can straddle that fine line of making fun of itself while at the same time portray the positive aspects. One of the running gags in the last episode made reference to nobel prize winner Dr. George Smoot. The clincher featured a cameo by Smoot himself. Not too many shows you'd see something like that. The same show had Terminator/Serenity star Summer Glau. Unfortunately I have not kept up with the Sarah Connor Chronicles. (Should I?)

Heroes is gettting a bit better lately after an mundane season beginning. I'd like to comment on Fringe, but I missed a few episodes this season and just when I decided I was going to make the extra effort it seems to be in a mid-season break or something.

You're not alone

I haven't seen any of them either so I don't think we are the only ones. I haven't seen, or heard of, Bg Bang Theory, but it sounds good. My favourite geek shows are the IT Crowd and Flight of the Conchords. I think Moss on the former resembles Jermaine on the latter.

Genre-TV

I haven't seen Big Bang Theory as yet, but will on your reco.

Heroes, I've essentially lost interest in.  Though this largely due to that I keep missing eps.  If they run a catchup marathon, I'll likely be back in.

Still heavily enjoy both Fringe and Terminator: TSCC - the former has come into its own (distinguishing itself from the X-Files) save to the extent that it too has become must-see-genre-tv at TAG-HQ, while the latter has in my view the single best (current) genre atmosphere on television.

It's getting very close to capturing the same end-of-times meets melancholia that the original Terminator movie wafted so well; so if you enjoyed the roadmosphere of the original, I'd reco the series.  Imo Terminator will likely need hardcore genre support because it's so true to its own vision with no pandering to the mainstream that I can detect, so much so that I'm not sure how it can survive.

'owever, the original Terminator did manage to strike a chord with the masses too,  so perhaps I'm worred about nothing.

Otherwise, I've recently started tuning in to Chuck and find it to be a lot of fun.  I find it to be an amiable feel-good genre series.  It's like watching little Jimmy Fallon (or a clone of, live the life of a secret agent -Ed) it just makes you smile.  Sometimes, that's just what your day needs.  I find.

Big Shock

I'm pretty shocked to hear that TBBT is not something everyone here is already watching, much less that you haven't even heard about it. It's a monday night CBS show now in it's seacond. Its debut was anything but a big bang in the ratings, but has really come into it's own this year. While anyone can get a good laugh out of the show it really hits the spot with many geeks with stuff that only we could understand. You really have to give it a try.

Captain: Lady Denstat clued me in on The IT Crowd last year and I've since watched all the episodes and anxiously await new episodes as they are made available. While the show certainly has a geek side, there is so much more to it than that. Not really surprised that the attempt to make an american variant failed. It's the Brit take that really shines here. As a secondary entertainment aspect, I enjoy trying to pick out items and references that I know in all the background office decorations/posters/clutter. You've mentioned Flight of the Conchords to me before. Have to look that one up.

TAG: Yes, Fringe has created it's own path, w.r.t X-Files, something of a concern at the begining. I've wondered if they purposely named the character of "Walter" so that they could then portray the complete opposite of calm/cool/collected/sane Skinner. I'll try to take your sug to get back with T:SCC. Now that I think of it, I may have dropped it when I started watching Big Bang, as the two may be opposing time slots. That would explain it.

I've also heard good things about Chuck and I KNOW that I should be watching Dexter as well. I guess despite what we sometimes say, there really are good TV shows around. Some of these I'm just going to have to pick up as DVD sets and catch up on over time. I'm curretly cycling through Season 2 of Babylon 5 (the entire series sets were recently going for $18/pop at Costo) and just finished both volumes of season 1 of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea before that.
