Con*Cept guests

I visited the Con*Cept website a few minutes ago to check out whether or not they have signed up a guest of honour and it is Kelley Armstrong. Forgive my ignorance, but I've never heard of her. According to the site she's written the "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series, "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, and Nadia Stafford crime series." I'm sure they are wonderful books, but none of them are my cup of chai. I guess they're hoping to appeal to younger con-goers.

The other GoHs include a local special effects guru Olivier Xavier and actress Karen Cliche. Xavier did some work on a short-lived TV show which I loved called The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. Cliche starred in a bunch of unmemorable TV shows, including Vampire High, Adventure Inc., Mutant X ,Young Blades and Flash Gordon.

I can't say the guest list is knocking me out and am wondering if I want to shell out the dough so soon after attending Worldcon. My only motivation is to help support my local con, which I know is going to be hurting and hard-pressed to make enough money to lure big-name guests next year.

Any opinions?

C.X.

Con*undrum

I know what you mean. The GoH and guests have been up on the site for a while, and like you, I have no real interest in them so I'm in the same frame of mind as yourself. I want to come down but fear that it's going to be lackluster and even boring if they can't drum up some decent panel discussions with some of the regulars. But I'm keeping the weekend penciled in for now although I may opt out. Believe it or not I'm still looking forward to some vacation time and hope to head south for a week.

It's not my local con, but we don't even have a local con. How sad is that?

PS: One of the more memorable panels years ago was when a team who were working on the Jules Verne show came down and gave the scoop before it had even aired. The brought down a cool looking model and gave a great talk. I remember looking forward to when the show would finally air. Just goes to show you that sometimes there are some good surprises at the cons. Oh, and the GoH that the mustered up that year was Eugene Roddenberry. Nice guy and all, but hardly an SF fixture or big draw.

I have one friend who knows

I have one friend who knows her, but I don't.

I suspected they would have trouble picking guests for Con*Cept after the huge amount at Anticipation, but I'll still attend. Not only do I support the local con, but I'll also be a panelist. Hope you folks'll be there, but I understand if you're not.

No Con*cept for me

I was still debating attending this year but as it turns out my calendar is already filled with commitments for both saturday and sunday, so I can now say with certainty that I won't be coming down even for just one day.  It would have been nice though.

I also saw some video footage of the comic convention that was held just this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see that it appeared to be a much bigger con attendance wise than I thought. The number of costumed attendees seemed to outnumber the usual Con*cept members that dress up. How about a quickie Comiccon report Thoth (as I assume that you finally did end up going yourself). Or are you going to make me wait for TOU #10? Eye-wink

I am writing a full con

I am writing a full con report for the zine, but in brief: this year's show was a major improvement from last year.

Just to mention (even though

Just to mention (even though this is an old thread): Karen Cliche (pronounced Kleesh) was an army brat, but a francophone one.

I found one of Kelly Armstrong's novels in my haul from the con 5 years old after everything ended. She was there then to sign it.
