Science fiction recommendations for kids and teenagers

If you've got kids and are wondering which science fiction books to start them off with, IO9 ran a list not too long ago of titles that will capture their attention. It's an interesting selection and the additional comments from readers adds even more titles to choose from.

Some of the criticisms in the comments is that the list skews to white males and doesn't offer much from women which probably indicates that many of the titles might appeal more to boys than girls. So what about YA science fiction for the fairer sex? This blogger offers some suggestions.

A lot of the books mentioned are familiar, mostly because many of us read them when we were younger so we think that today's kids will also like them, but chances are they'll like newer stuff from newer writers whom you've never heard of like this writer.

You can read lots more about YA SF on this blog that is dedicated to the subject.

There is not only YA books to appeal to youngsters, but now there is YA SF TV (or YASFTV for short) like this new Disney show, Skyrunners.

One wonders, though, with the ubiquity of science fiction in their lives, do kids take it for granted?
