Doctor Who Season 2: Special 7 minute Preview of New Doctor (David Tennant)

http://www.geocities.com/michael_xavier_maelstrom/doctor_who2.jpg

The New Doctor Who Season 2 (starring David Tennant as The New Doctor)doesn't air in North America until the fall of 2006 (Oct 9th on CBC in Canada as verified >>Here<<) so for those that are waiting patiently and 'aven't cheated (by downloading season 2 episodes from the U.K via bit torrent, you naughty naughty peoples -Ed) and for that matter, even for those that 'ave, 'ere's a 7 minute "limited edition" segment that was specially made for a charity event in England by the creators of Doctor Who.

It takes place directly after the re-generation scene at the end of season 1 but before the Christmas Special.

And we have it 'ere.

Note: I will be meddling in msg source code in an erstwhile attempt to insert the Doctor Who Special directly into this message . if I'm not back in 2 minutes, send re-inforcements.  Preferably of the plaid-skirt clad variety.

OK, 'ere goes!

(Everyone Hold Onto Your Shorts! - Ed)

I'm going to be one of those

I'm going to be one of those naughty folks getting it on BT (shame on the CBC, airing it 8 months after Britain! It was bad enough having Galactica half a tear later). Overall I haven't heard many positive reviews of this season.

The PLUS-TARD'IS of Doctor Who Season 2

I'm going to be one of those naughty folks getting it on BT (shame on the CBC, airing it 8 months after Britain! It was bad enough having Galactica half a tear later).  Overall I haven't heard many positive reviews of this season -- Sir Thoth

I 'ear that 'mate, it drives me bonkos, I 'ave yet to hear a good rational behind the wait either.  The B.B.C tossed heaping accolades at the CBC for helping Doctor Who become the success it became in Canada, and then we 'ave to wait a ludicrous period of time for season 2 like some sort of second class Scifi citizens?

Admittedly this temporal aggrivation is likely the CBC programming department's doing rather than the BBC's(unconfirmed - but we know Space:TIS deliberately of their own volition delayed BSG in Canada)

..would that these corporations would stop patting eachother on their respective posteriors long enough to thank we FANS for making these series a success.

Remember US? 'ello.

Hint: You can thank us by airing them promptly.

Judging by that 7 minute promo, there's significantly less chance that new Doctor Who will 'ave it off with Rose.

(so much for the fanboy's Billie Piper nudie scene - Ed)

At least with the Doctor. Hard to miss the sledgehammer subtext when Tennant was running a regen bio systems check., he came up with a "limp wrist".

Blame the NHL

The reason the show didn't run in Canada at the same time as Britain is because the hockey playoffs were on every night. It would have been constantly pre-empted and it wouldn't get any sort of ratings if it ran during the summer.

The most recent season of Doctor Who has already been broadcast by the BBC so if you are impatient to see all 13 episodes, they're all available as torrent downloads. I've already watched a few of them. While they've been enjoyable, I haven't warmed up to Tennant as the new doctor yet. Even Rose seems less enthusiastic about him, but perhaps that's intentional on the part of the scriptwriters.

Doctor Who's new companion named

While the rest of Canada is waiting for the second season of Doctor Who, there's news that an actress has been chosen as the doctor's new companion. Her name is Freema Agyeman and, as you would expect, she's a cutie. She appear in a role in the 12th episode of the second season and soon after auditioned for the part of the companion. I think it's a good idea to have a new companion along with the new doctor. It makes for a clean break from the first season.

New companion

As long as she don't giggle incessantly at the wrong moments she'll be ok.

"martha"?

her character's name is going to be "martha jones"??

um, not very 'hot' as names go, but let's hope freema has the chops to overcome this little handicap! Laughing out loud

Capt. Xerox's picture

Rose Tyler ain't so hot either

The current companion's name, Rose Tyler, also sounds like the moniker of someone's grandmother, but that hasn't done anything to diminish Billie Piper's contributions to the show. I'm going to miss her, but I also thought I'd miss Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. I'm quite enjoying David Tennant as the new Doctor. Anyone else have any opinions about him or the show in general?

Doctor Who re-casting

All I can say is that they make re-casting Doctor Who (the time-lord and the show) seem far easier than ought be legally allowed.

Excellent selections thus far.

But I do think they've done a bit of deck stacking.

Billie Piper, Eccleston and Tennant might seem like fortuitous happenstance oriented casting to us here in the Americas, but anyone in the U.K know is awares that even Billie Piper was coming in from a major adolescent-pop-star background in England (I have one of her albums, femme pop-club-dance, UK Britney Spears'ish in stature *pause* tell anyone and I shall have at you) and Tennant and Eccleston both light up the any stage they're on. Obviously.

Nevertheless, considering how wrong things can go when casting and chemistry is off and how difficult it is to have lightening strike twice in the same place so soon, It's almost embarassing how well cast the show has been.

Both Tennant and Piper were

Both Tennant and Piper were recognized for their work when they won for best actor and actress at Britain's National Television Awards at the beginning of the month. The show itself also won for best drama. Not that I'm familiar with the other nominees, but from what I've seen of season 2 of the new Doctor Who, I'd say the awards are justly deserved. C.X.

Tennant I can understand but ought Piper really be winning an best actress award? (for essentially playing a tart slash herself -Ed)

Semi good news for stability fans, Tennant will be staying with Doctor Who at least until 2008!

Tennant cagey on 'Doctor Who' future

Saturday, November 4 2006, 13:55 UTC - by Neil Wilkes

David Tennant has refused to comment on how much longer he will stay with Doctor Who.

The actor, who took over from Christopher Eccleston as the Time Lord last year, is contracted until the end of the fourth series in 2008 - but has given no commitment beyond that.

Having taken the award for best actor at the National Television Awards earlier this week, Tennant was asked if the acclaim meant he would be tempted to stay with the show for longer. "That's a good question," he replied. "I'm not going to answer it."

Tennant previously revealed that he had a firm idea of when he would quit.

Radio 4 has Dirk Gently

If you're a fan of Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently series, you'll be happy to know that BBC 4 is airing an adaptation of the show on the web. It even got a good review in The Times.

The Avante Guardian's picture

[BBC Radio Online] DNA's Dirk Gently + AH's Brave New World

The BBC has updated their website and online radio player.

where my favorite feature the "progammes listed by day of the week" /all of last week's programmes archived/ /all playable/ is now deaded and replaced with a calendar.

oh look it listed Monty Python as having aired 2 weeks ago in the calendar!

unfortunately I can't play it because they only archive shows for 1 week.

wot's the bleedin point of that?

(I think the point of the calendar is that you can see and listen to what was on last week and see what is on next week by clicking in the calendar - Ed)

riiiight.

I could do that before.

Calendar Conclusion: keep your calendar if you must but for abaddon's sake bring back the programmes listed by day of the week.

Anyway on the right hand side of the number line the new BBC Radio Player has an "More Like This" feature built in that allows you to jump directly to listening to another show deemed to be ..more like the one you're listening to.

Excellent feature.

CURRENTLY AIRING PROGRAMMES OF POSSIBLE INTEREST TO GENRE FANS:

If you missed it the first time around the audio play of Dirk Gently's Long Dark Teatime of the Soul (by Douglas Adams - Ed) is now playing on BBC radio 4.

if looking for something along a sim DNA vein, you could do worse than giving The Brightonomicon a try, imo.

and also now airing of potential interest to the Alpha/Beta plus plus genre fans (1984, Fahrenheit 451, Equilibrium, Gattaca)

and possibly of interest even to the Epsilon minus semi-morons.

(Batman and Robin, Ishtar, almost anything directed by Brett Ratner -Ed)

*cough*

well, I say possibly because it seems to me the epsilon's were smart enough to get easy work.

Yes, as you have surmised, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is now playing on BBC radio 7.

Doctor Who (David Tennant) BBC Proms Specially-Filmed Scene

And now for something completely .. a bit of fun.

/BEGIN BBC News article extract/

Thousands of Doctor Who fans have seen a specially-filmed scene starring David Tennant at a BBC Proms concert dedicated to the sci-fi drama.

The concert featured music from the series, as well as classical favourites from composers including Holst and Wagner on the theme of space and time.

The panto-style scene, showing Tennant addressing the 6,000-strong audience, was also shown on the show's website.

Actress Freema Agyeman hosted Sunday's event at London's Royal Albert Hall.

She played Martha - the last-but-one assistant to Tennant's Doctor.

'Brilliant time'

Series producer Russell T Davies wrote a specially-filmed scene for the concert

The special scene was written by Russell T Davies, who masterminded Doctor Who's return to TV screens in 2005 and announced recently he would be stepping down as executive producer from 2010.

"We've had a brilliant time," Davies told BBC News.

"If you were in the Royal Albert Hall, you would have had a unique Doctor Who experience," he said of the special scene's airing.

"It's fantastic because people queued in the heat and came a long way - I met someone who came here from Belgium."

Doctor Who Time Flash

I've been a big Doctor Who fan since I was watching the old series as a teenager.  Love the new series now airing Fridays on CBC.  However Torchwood isn't really my cup of tea.

Latest news I've had of Doctor Who's future is that Tennant agreed to do two or three movie-style Doctor Who adventures for 2009, while he takes a pseudo-break to do other stuff.  A fifth series is in the works for 2010.

Doctor Who vs Torchwood

Hail BJ,

If pressed, I prefer Doctor Who too, but Torchwood really grew on me throughout the season; it seemed like one moment it was a passive curio-interest, the next it suddenly became one of my fave series.

Sometimes this show feels very much like Davies' new Doctor Who, other times like Buckaroo Bonzai.

with a touch of Buffy sprinkled on.

James Marsters crisp dialogue and sardonic repartee is becoming increasingly present in Torchwood. It is becoming apparent that Marsters personality was a great part of the source of (Buffy's) Spike persona, you know, in the same way that Jack Nicholson is often the source of his character's persona.

Since I love all of these, this is really working for me.

During the Torchwood season finale this week, they came up with an ingenius and disturbing manner of dealing with the issue of Captain Jack's ability to resurrect slash his immortality.

Though they down-played the _horror_ of the implications (during this episode - Ed) I suspect the psychological ramifications will return to disturb Jack and possibly turn him towards a darker path in the future.

The vicious idea Gray (Jack's brother -Ed) comes up with to make Jack pay for letting go of his hand (and the suffering Gray went through as a consequence -Ed) although basic in construct, is worthy of the disgusting likes of Josef Mengele or the Marquis de Sade, and could I suspect be applied to The Doctor. Forcing a series of disgusting regenerations.

I don't see how anyone could go through that without having serious psychologic problems as a result.  Jack's always resilient, it's part of his charm, but I don't see him simply shrugging that off.

With Davies' scoring a 2 for 2 at least on the TAG excellence-in-TV-scale, I'm tempted to check out the other Doctor Who Spin-off "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

[Doctor Who News] Planet o/t Dead+Tennant Diary+New Dr+WARNING!

Doctor Who News roundup.

David Tennant's swan song: There are reportedly 4 Doctor Who episodes sub-nomened "specials" starring David Tennant left to go before we have to say goodbye to him. Boo *sniff*

On the right hand side of the number line, they will be filmed and will air throughout 2009 starting with the currently filming "Planet of the Dead" to be aired on BBC One, Easter 2009.

Although effectively a shortened season, this means David Tennant will play the Doctor throughout 2009. Yay.

I wasn't able to find anything concrete on the other 3 upcoming Tennant special episodes, but did find some interesting tidbits.

To be taken as rumours and lightly, or as spoilers, if they turn out to be correct.

Episode 15 aka The Easter Special: Planet of the Dead (title confirmed, currently shooting)

The Doctor loses the Tardis. and is forced to take the double-dutch bus.  Someone better tell him to stay away from the bloke at the back.  That isn't the engine causing the seat to vibrate.

Punch here to be taken to Planet Gallifrey for a sneak-peak slash breakdown of everything known about episode 15 thus far. WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS.

Episode 16: World War II.

Episode 17: Lost in Time.

Episode 18: Degeneration.

titles for episode 16 through 18 are speculative and put forward over at the intriguing Sylvester Mccoy New Doctor Who webiste's 2009/2010 Episode Guide.

Which also contains a look at possible titles and plots for the 2010 Doctor Who series starring Matt Smith.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm(n) perhaps Tennant didn't lose the Tardis so much as McCoy lifted it to see what was going to happen in future Doctor Who?

Back in the present, David Tennant has put up a video diary of his current shoot on Planet of the Dead.

Wot would look remarkably like this:

*note if you pause the screen while David is holding the script, you can make out some of the details of a scene in the upcoming PotD special.

Back to the Future, to learn a bit more about the upcoming 11th Doctor, The Telegraph answers the question "so, who is this 26 year old whipper snapper" with a bio.

and Matt Smith answers the Q: so besides having the complexion of a nosferatu, wot am I otherwise like? in the BBC One extended Matt Smith interview extracted from The Doctor Who Confidential series.

Finally as a bit of a temporally-tardy Christmas present for Canadians and/or any other peoples that didn't get to see David Tennant in the Doctor Who 2008 Christmas Special titled "The Next Doctor", some good peoples 'ave started uploading it to Youtube.

Thus far the first 5 minutes are available, with hopefully more to come.

And it looks like a royally good time too.

Why the CBC (who co-produced the new Doctor Who series!) keeps fragging with Canadian Doctor Who fans - by airing the new series substantially later than the U.K broadcast and that's IF they air all the episodes, and IF they don't edit the abaddon out of it - I don't know, but it was quite frustrating.

Canadians can thank gawd or at least Space: The Imagination Station, as they have purloined the rights to distribute Torchwood, and it immediately cut the wait period down from a frackin YEAR broadcast delay (Torchwood season 1 on CBC) to 5 months (Torchwood season 2 on Space).

And I'll wager the broadcast delay will drop to virtually nil with Space's programming dept in command.

I like the CBC. Even if their handling of Doctor Who and Torchwood was frustrating it must be said they still appeared sooner on the CBC than they did on U.S TV, if still miles later than their appearance on U.K TV, but it's ridiculous to have to wait 6 months to a year for any series that the CBC co-bloody-produced!

*gaze left* *gaze right* *flap trenchcoat*

Pssst.

I *suspect* the real cause for the CBC broadcast delay (and skipped or edited episodes) in the latter years was most likely to do with an inside-agreement/attempt to bolster Canadian and American Doctor Who DVD sales.

After all, if the last season hits DVD -before- (or just as it begins) its airing in North America, then presumably NA Doctor Who fans would be tempted into purchasing last season on DVD _instead_ of waiting for them to appear on their local TV throughout the following year.

The separation of Torchwood from the CBC..

(who stopped funding Torchwood after season 1 just before it became a success in the U.K *pause* mmph mmmMmmph AAAHAHAHAHAHA)

sorry, relapse.

*tug down on shirt*

..created the opening for Space:TIS to pick up and air Torchwood,  and that is likely a good thing for the future.

because nothing works to the customers satisfaction level better than free market competition.

No matter wot corporations and effective-monopolies try to otherwise convince us of.

That's good for Torchwood, but unfortunately it is likely more of this broadcast delay excrement is in store for the North American audience with regards to Doctor Who.  Because although it was rumoured that the CBC had stopped co-funding Doctor Who, they have denied it.

Which ostensibly means that they'll probably still have broadcast rights to the new Doctor Who in 2009 and 2010.

Which means we can expect more (or worse) BBC-to-CBC corporate inside deal shenanigans in which the CBC television viewer is _the least served_ customer.

I'm a warnin the lot of you Canadian and American varmint television corporations!

we live in a GLOBAL community now twonks, and this monoculture mentality won't fly.

If you delay Doctor Who and/or Torchwood to the same or worse temporal degree again; delay it in an attempt to bolster some other revenue stream (DVD sales, specialty channel subscriptions, pay per view, et cetera) fans will likely give more serious consideration to moving ENTIRELY over to "alternate" means of viewing Doctor Who/Torchwood.

You know, viewing them _AS THEY'RE BEING AIRED_ in Britain.

We have choices now, you're no longer the only game in town.

It ought be enough that you make money the traditional way, with the TV series actually airing ON TV (there's a novel idea - Ed) with commercials supplying your income _FOLLOWED BY_ DVD sales, without shafting the television viewer in some greedy (attempt to) reverse that sequence or otherwise bolster alternate revenue streams at the expense of television viewers.

Ye Have Been Warned.

Ye Shall Precipitate The Nerd Apocalpyse If You Keep This Twonk Behavior Up!

(this message will self-destruct in 3..2..*run* - Ed)
