What's *Your* Wallpaper (?)
Greetings
and
Welcome
to
"..What's ..Your ..Wallpaper!"
The (Gameshow -Ed) thread that asks
"so uh, wot's your wallpaper? show me yours and I'll show you mine" *\/\/iggleEyebrows*
I've always been curious as to what other genre people's Wallpapers were;
no doubt they change regularly on strange whims (or not - Ed)
but whatever your relative level of sanity, I should like to see what people
have deemed worthy of gracing their PC background.
P.S If you need a free image server to upload your background image to: http://www.imageshack.us/
Myself, I seem to be in an computer generated image phase of late, so I'm going to cheat and upload 2 wallpapers.
I've been (schizophrenically -Ed) alternating between these 2 backgrounds for the last month, but finally gave up
on one of them when it became too bloody depressing as Winter finally set in.
This had been my background for several months, up until this week
but as of Winter storming in here this week
(insanely he got rid of the warm summer imagery and - Ed)
this has apparently finally won and settled my PC in for a long winters nap.
Don't know why I enjoy this image so much, it's computer generated, there are superior model-based images of The Enterprise, yet there's something oxymoronically hyper-"real" about this image's effect on this mind's retina, when it's set to 'stretch' as wallpaper.
So, I showed you mine, will you show me yours?

My wallpapers
I usually have so many application windows that I rarely even see my wallpaper, but I do occasionally change it. On my office computer, I stick to space scenes. You can't be too geeky in the office. I usually use either stuff from the Hubble Space Telescope, as can be found here, or from NASA.
Here's my current choice:
On my home machine, I am partial to Chesley Bonestell paintings, but lately, my kids have been on a Star Wars kick so I let them pick new ones all the time. I currently have some art inspired by the Star Wars: Battlefront video game:

I thought for about 5 seconds about putting my wallpaper up here .. but its a little to, to for public viewing -- my work wall paper is an old dog that I loved and who died a number of years ago -- I must admit I was a little surprised at how sedate these wallpapers are given the nature of some sci-fi cover art -- I guess at least some of you are in my (blush) boat <gg>

I change mine so often that
I change mine so often that I had too many around in my images folder, so now I have them in a rotation, my background changes every 5 minutes.
If anybody would like to use some of them, they are all available online, many of which are things I did or photos I worked with for DVD covers I created. :

Thanks Cosmic.
I can see that your job is definitely getting to you. Those are some nice horror images. Unfortunately I don't think having them as a background on my PC would be a good idea with the little one. (I try to keep my Rue Morgue magazines out of site too since some of those covers are pretty gruesome.)
I think I'll get them for here at work. I don't have priviledges for my main computers, but I've got complete control of a few laptops that I can use to freak some people out. (Heh heh)

Captain X: Nice, The Star Wars Planet Canada!
(uh it's Hoth - Ed)
If you say so Ed.
I recall your inquiring not that long ago in a TWatEotU poll re: the best way (viewing order -Ed) to see Star Wars;
spotted an analytical-article on that very subject which includes 2 new interesting viewing orders.
Method 3: Prequels as Flashbacks sounds good: Ep IV-V-I-II-III-VI
hopefully we'll get all 6 re-released in Canada, so I 'ave an excuse to carry my new spring-loaded Force Light-saber
in public.

I said that out loud didn't I. I hate it when that happens.

Cosmic: Very Nice Wallpapers! The pic of The Feather sent me on an emotional rollercoaster ride
first into my childhood and then into an analysis of the limits of both our humanity and our mortality.
You're gonna pay for that. Someday. Somehow. Someway.
P.S: If anyone wants those hyper Star Trek images, wallpapers are here:

FWIW
Here's mine.
I've been impressed by TAS (which I've just seen for the first time since childhood.) Bonus, its left-justified layout works well for Macs.
Star Trek TAS
Nice. I need to pick up the TAS DVD set. I'm always a bit apprehensive that older TV
series won't hold up very well to modern viewing but I'll wager this will be one of the
few that is just as good and as impenetrably strange as I remember it.

Cosmic: Send this one to William Gibson
Cos: found this older thread revived on the main TWATEOTU page and dropped in on your AV Design wallpaper page
spotted you'd added new art, particularly fond of this one.
bloody good design. Puts me in mind of William Gibson.
Although IIRC he no longer uses a typewriter to pen his novels, he has mentioned that he finds that the media continually insists he does.
ergo I'd like to engage in some blatant artistic sacrophiliac and suggest an edit?
ie. change the "back-space" key to read "Esc" or "Escape" ?
..und send it to William Gibson.

Wallpapering
Hi everyone!
Speaking of wallpaper, in keeping with the season, my current wallpaper is a satellite picture of Hurricane Isabel about to hit the Carolinas.
Hurricanes are beautiful, as long as you are far away from them.
- How the heck do you get this editor to do single spacing??

Hail BJ, long time no extrapolate the iguana! Snarfy to see a classic Montreal BBSer aboard TWATEOTU.
Post Script: Had to nod in agreement at your statement,
re: having to parse words too carefully over at the defunct Montreal BBS website.
Ironically (or if not, then at least symptomatically - Ed) that was the reason
for the decline in my involvement there.
In effect I had an obsessed agenda'd stalker and it became too inhibiting to be enjoyable any longer.
Luckily they don't appear to know of this place, and/or are less inclined to be stalker'ish 'ere.
Post Post Script: I'm not sure but I believe under section 4 subparagraph 2 of the wall-paper act, describing one's wallpaper instead of uploading constitutes cheating.
In any event, Welcome aboard TWATEOTU BJ!

Welcome Wagon
G'day!
Thanks for the words of welcome, TAG! It's much appreciated.
One of the main reasons I ended up here was that I've recently recovered from being insane for a long period of time, and I decided that it's time to let go of past negativity and make a fresh start.
Stalking, whether physical or online, is terrifying, no matter how you look at it. I've experienced both. I agree with you, certain elements don't seem to have located this web-based oasis, which is a good thing.
Anyway, if I could figure out how to upload the wallpaper, I would... (scowl)

Wallpaper Wars: Art vs Science
and if you thought I was cheating before with 2 wallpapers in desktop contention at TAG HQ (the Trek image ultimately won that war locally -Ed)
Weeeeell, there are now ))3(( wallpapers currently battling for dominance on the desktop (oh dear - Ed):
I enjoy image Pic 1 quite a bit, so much so I made it my FireFox load/booting image, and so it may lose the war on account of it appears onscreen regularly anyway.
So what is on *Your* Desktop Now?

Pulpy goodness
I quite like this one. It gives me some ideas for my annual calendar!
[coming soon]The Astounding (2009) ScienceFiction/Genre Calendar
I see by last years TWATEOTU calendar printed and hanging on me wall (sideways for reasons we're not going to ask TAG about - Ed) that that time is fast-approaching!
It's been a strange year.
Can't wait to see what you have in store for this year's new calendar Cap.
P.S: 'aye that shade of tangerine puts me in mind of the ol TWATEOTU website, you had a superior shade (more neurologically aesthetically satisfying to this viewer) a sort of electric-orange that represents-well the spirit of Science-Fiction.
It's amazing how powerfully color influences atmosphere, mood and thought.
(yes TAG, there's a whole science around it, it's why fast food companies use yellow and orange, they've been scientifically proven to have effects on neuro AND biochemistry, in those two examples, they energize and augment hunger -Ed)
That's what I get for letting Ed read over my shoulder.
Not that I'm advocating a change in color layout (perish the thought - Ed) heheh, seriously not, I find you have a good knack for representing the current spirit of the site with whatever color scheme you choose to employ.
Thy will be done and if it hasn't been said recently, let it ring loud and clear: you've been doing a great job Cap!

[WallpaperTechTip] Google Labs "Similar Images" search
If you find that you gravitate towards a certain wallpaper color and design aesthetic, you might like this
new image search function: Google Labs "Similar Images search"
If for example you like this wallpaper:
and
1. would like to find others that are similar.
or
2. would prefer not to have the Windows XP logo emblazened across it
you can run a google lab similar image search for it.
At cursory glance, the catch is, you have to find the original first.
In this case it took 2 search steps to find it.
1. over at Google SS, I punched in "blue ocean wallpaper" as my search criteria.
2. clicked on the image that looked sim to the wallpaper above and it did indeed find it in the first page of results.
Punch ((here)) to see it in action.

my wallpaper for this season
Last month I was displaying autumnal scenes, but right now I am using images from the European Southern Observatory website. Images and video podcasts can be downloaded for free. They are very informative and beautiful to look at on my monitor. I recommend you check it out. Your site is also very interesting to visit. Thank you. Liddon.
