Bridge to Terebithia

Not exactly Sci Fi but then I am a great fan of Juvie fantasy -- this was one of my favorites.  Has anyone read it and or has anyone seen the film?  If so, any comments?

Never heard of it

I saw the trailer when I took the kids to see Arthur et les Minimoys. (Arthur and the Invisibles in English). The trailer looked interesting, but I have no knowledge of the series that inspired the movie.

It appears to be another entry in the competition to be the next juvenile fantasy franchise to replace the aging Harry Potter. The Golden Compass is another fantasy movie that is coming soon as is the next Narnia film. I'm anxious to see that one as I thoroughly enjoyed The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Its not a series -- just a single -- beautifully written but kind of sad -- in the book one of the main characters dies in the end --

I'll add it to the list

I'm not a big fantasy fan anymore, since it all seems so derivative, but every once in a while there is a gem worth reading. Your enthusiasm for the book intrigues me so I'll add it to my list of books to read. I never read the Narnia books as a kid, but read them all before the movie came out and I thought they were great. Another classic kiddie fantasy series that I'd like to try is Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea stories.

Way back when I was in Cegep I could never sign up for the Science Fiction class because the timing always conflicted with my core classes. I had to satisfy myself with the Fantasy course they offered and even that one I had take during a summer. That class focused on the first 3 books of Leguin's Earthsea series. I recall enjoying the first book but quickly lost interest afterwards.

But Fantasy was never a my bailiwick.  I enjoyed parts of the Narnia movie, but I wasn't overwhelmed by it. Same for LotR I'm afraid.  I did like Lemony Snicket a lot (both the first book in the series and the movie). But I don't think that counts.  On a recomendation I did pick up L'Engles  Wrinkle in  Time but have yet to read that one.

These are great!!  I have read them many times!  You might also want to try Madeline L'Engle's Time Trilogy (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door and a Swiftly Tilting Planet) and Susan Coopers The Dark Is Rising Books (5 in the series) both are excellent!!
