Where were you when Star Wars came out?

Hi all,

there's a lot of hype surrounding today's 30th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film. Do you remember the first time you saw it? Was it in the theatre before it got retitled A New Hope?

I remember seeing it late in the summer of 77 at a drive-in theatre north of Montreal. It was pretty much near the end of its run and it may have been one of the few theatres that was still showing the movie that summer.

I would have been turning 14 the next month so it's clear that I saw movie during a very formative time in my life so it's not surprise that I was profoundly affected by the movie. I had never seen anything like it and was entranced.

That night I had a dream that seemed to last all night. I didn't remember any details of the dream except that it took place in a desert and the dream was punctuated by orchestral music that I later realized was John Williams' Star Wars score.

Given the fractured nature of media today, I doubt that we'll ever see another science fiction movie phenomenon like Star Wars.

I was almost 11 when I saw

I was almost 11 when I saw it in '78. I saw it at a theater in Burlington, Vermont on one of our visits to my aunt there.

Saw the preview ads first.

I distincly recall seeing pictures of the movie before it came out. It was in one of those magazines they give at the theather with upcoming attractions. I did not go often to the movies in those days, but as I was 14 I was just old enough to start going on my own with friends. I remember that the preview mag had storm trooper pictures, Darth Vader and CP30 and R2D2. So I was all ready for it when it came out. Probably saw it the first or second week. To say that I was awestruck is an understatement. I was hooked right with the openning with the emperial cruiser filling the screen. As soon as I came home I wanted to go out and buy the book so I could relive it. (Which is exactly what I did. Still have that book too!). It was also one the the first and few movies that I went back to see again. (Alien was another).

Hard to believe that it's been that long.

Don't forget the Star Wars record

I didn't have the book, but my brother got the Story of Star Wars record which was an abridged audio version of the story.. We listened to it until we wore out the grooves. I don't know what ever happened to that record.

I recently learned that there was a radio version of the Star Wars movies on NPR which you can still buy today. I have acquired a copy and intend on using it as in-car entertainment when I take the family unit on a road trip this summer.

I actually cut school that

I actually cut school that day to go see it at the theater the same week it came out, if I remember correctly it was the Atwater cinema where the Zellers restarant is now.

Hopefully for me none of my theachers are reading this.  Smiling

Sigh!

Such yongsters. I skipped work to go see with my younger brother. If I'm not mistaken it was at the Imperial Cinema. I don't think it still exists. Beautiful place. I remember how quiet it got when the movie started and how everyone clapped and yelled and whistled when it ended.

Imperial opening

Not sure if the Imperial was open at that time for SW but I do know that there was a grand Reopeing of the Imperial just when Indiana Jones opened. Since I knew a bit about that film from Starlog at the time, I coerced some unknowing friends that we should see it. It was the second day of it's release and we were all blown away by that movie as well.  The one other movie I remember choosing for the gang to see was Clockwork Orange. I like to think that my movie picking skills were in high regard by my friends after that one. I think we went back to the Seville the next week to see it again.

Last time I passed by, it looked closed.

PS: Control-C is 'cut', Control-V is 'paste'. I don't think I would want to do my job without those short cuts!

where was I for star wars

I was in L.A. and saw it at United Artist Theatre during its opening week,  we stood in line for two or three hours and I told my buddy Dave we will never get in,  but when the doors opened I had never seen a theatre that size in my life.  When I left I could have sworn they went to a different planet to film the movie (I' m still not convinced they did'nt) .  although dated by more advanced special effects since then , at the time it was the coolest thing I had ever seen !!!!

STAR WARS

The summer of 1977 was an exciting year living in NYC , a lot happened that year i was 21, Star Wars was a movie well talked about before it came out me and my brother went on a double date we saw it in downtown Broadway, it was an awesome movie for its time then NYC suffered a major black out that darkend the whole city, it was mass looting all over the place it was a mess, Close Encounters came out that year as well, then we had the Son of Sam running around shooting and killing people, Elvis died that year and Freddie Prince killed him self, 1977 was a year i will never forget.
